When you talk about working with a "leader", Kathy is the first person who comes to my mind. I have worked with Kathy for almost 10 years. The staff feels comfortable coming to Kathy for an issue. Kathy practices and enforces the behaviors of excellence.
Be safe: Kathy makes it a priority to work extra or find coverage when staffing is short.
Be Responsive: Kathy always says hello to every person who comes on 7 West. Kathy runs to alarms, making sure our patients are safe.
Be Respectful/Be Professional: Kathy is professional and demonstrates this every day. She makes sure the unit is quiet throughout the night to ensure that patients are getting their rest.
Be Accountable: Kathy always comes to work on time, well prepared, and with a positive attitude.
Be Collaborative: Kathy will seek out information when needed. Kathy always says "thank you" to staff and other disciplines she interacts with. Kathy is always positive, even through the toughest of times, she is constantly motivating staff to be team players and to help out the unit and each other. When we are short staffed, Kathy will always come in to ensure that safe patient care is given, she does not want the staff to work short and get burned out. Kathy has changed her schedule so many times, again making sure she is present to support staff and work the unit. I honestly cannot even tell you how many times she has done this over the last 1 year or more. She displays trust and professionalism by understanding how hard it is to work short staffed. She has the enthusiasm to keep the night shift upbeat and motivated. This is the type of behavior not only is beneficial to the staff but it reflects on how patients feel, and they feel safe when Kathy is around. Kathy greets every new patient who comes to our unit. She is always smiling and reassuring them that they are in great hands on 7 West.
Staff can call Kathy at any time to ask questions. She is 100% vested in her position and with her staff. Kathy always says, "I love my job". Kathy truly does love her job!! Kathy encourages staff to participate in monthly staff meetings, encourages staff to be involved with unit council, and act as a liaison. Kathy is involved with helping to educate the staff in our soon to open TBI room. Kathy is such a cheerleader for nurses. Kathy goes out of her way every day to help others and never complains. When you refer to a nurse as "flexible" it screams Kathy!
