The entire 8N staff went above and beyond for a patient nearing the end of his life. Before the patient decided on hospice care, the patient spent a month or so in total during his treatments on 8N. When the patient would have down days, 8N staff would go into his room to sing to him or bring him some of his favorite treats like donuts or peanut butter cupcakes. The staff even worked together to take the patient on a fishing trip. Each time therapy would go into his room to work with him they would ask what he would like to do that day for therapy and he would always reply "go fishing". So, they made that happen. They set up for a physical therapist to go with and drive the wheelchair van. They also had an occupational therapist and a nurse to go with him to the lake. All of his family was there to surprise him with a picnic and his fishing pole. They were able to fish for a few hours and reminisce about how he would go fishing at this spot each day after work and all of the types of bait he would use to catch his fish. The staff took pictures of the patient with all of his family. The patient cried and told the staff and his family how thankful he was to be able to go fishing again. Two days later the patient's status was greatly declining and his family decided hospice care was his best option. When the patient left the hospital to go to the facility on hospice, the staff on 8N lined the hallways to say goodbye to the patient and his family. Two days later 8N was notified that the patient had died. The 8N staff is always going above and beyond for their patients; this is just one of many examples of 8N trying to help uplift a patient during a difficult time.
