A young female patient was admitted to ICU following a suicide attempt. She had been Baker Acted and had a sitter at her bedside. The patient had several acting out episodes where a Code Green had to be called.
The next morning, Joyce Nealy was the Charge Nurse on ICU. A Code Green was called on the patient again. Instead of writing off the hysterical patient as a crazy person, Joyce Nealy took the time to listen to the young woman's concerns. The patient related that recently she had broken up with her boyfriend and he had threatened to steal everything in her house when she was gone. Joyce called the patient's sister who validated this concern. Then Joyce contacted our security department who assisted in calling Miami Dade Police Department. The police stopped a robbery in progress at the patient's house and the suspect was her ex-boyfriend. After this, the patient was able to calm down and cooperate with the plan of care.
Joyce consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty to the care for the patients on her floor. This is only one of many episodes.
