Marie White is an exemplary nurse day in and day out. Not a single day goes by where Marie does not work as a team player and go the extra mile for her patients. She is one of the strongest nurses in Labor and Delivery, where her skills are far reaching.

Her clinical experiences have led her to think critically and she is always able to see “the big picture”. Marie is constantly teaching medical students, nursing students and even experienced nurses. I find myself, a nurse with five years experience asking Marie questions and always getting a well thought out and carefully explained answer.

Marie works in Labor and Delivery triage where patients can fly in and out and deliver at a moments notice. Somehow Marie always has the ability and time to bond with these patients. As these patients come to Labor and Delivery in a rush and in pain, they always know her name and she continually making them smile.

I can remember one instance where the patient did just that, and delivered five minutes after reaching the hospital door. Marie knew how urgent the situation was and was able to skillfully care for this patient by obtaining all of the correct and pertinent information and still manage to create a bond with her. Marie rushed her to Labor and Delivery where she gave a detailed report to the oncoming nurse and continued to stay by the patient’s side to reassure her that everything was going to be okay.

I learn by Marie’s example everyday and can see how important the act of touch and certain emotions can play into caring for a patient. I find working with her in triage an incredibly pleasant experience every time and I feel that she truly exhibits the qualifications to be awarded the DAISY Award.
