What can I say about Gary? I hear many people describe him as "a big ol' teddy bear you just want to hug". I couldn't agree more. He is truly one of the sweetest and most compassionate people I've ever known. I have NEVER cared for a patient who didn't love him. As soon as anyone meets him, they are immediately calmed and feel a strong sense of trust in him. It is truly amazing that he can accomplish this in the 2 seconds he meets them before they are wheeled to surgery. I know exactly how they feel.
He first took care of me when I was 16 year old and having my first surgery. He calmed my nerves (and my mom's) the second he walked in my room. I remember him even picking out a CD in the OR (back when we listened to them in OR) that he "thought a 16 year old girl would like" to listen to as I drifted off to sleep!! That moment still sticks out vividly in my mind after all of these years!!
Gary has cared for me 7 out of the 8 procedures I have had here. Every time I was at ease (and so were my family members) knowing he was caring for me. I knew that I was in some of the best, most capable hands that WRMC has. He most recently cared for me a few weeks ago and this was the first time I didn't know who my RN was going to be ahead of time. He walked into the room saying, "Hey Hollybear" (a nickname he has called me for years) and I beamed the biggest smile ever!! It was such a relief to see him!
Gary explains everything thoroughly before doing and always makes sure I am comfortable and relaxed. He never assumes that I know what is going to happen just because I am an RN. It has been a pleasure knowing him for most of my life, but an even greater pleasure to be both cared for by him and to work with him.
Gary, you truly are an inspiration and I strive to be like you everyday. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this prestigious award. You encompass every quality that an RN should be. Thanks for all you do!
