... According to her manager, Sharon is unfailingly supportive of her peers. Upon hearing about the DAISY Award, one of Sharon's colleagues wrote: Sharon has a wonderful big picture perspective of the unit, uses her ability to mentor wisely, and always looks for and takes the next step to help our EMU patients toward a successful discharge. Sharon is all about the patient. She is very comfortable in her role with research and consistently contributes to successful research visits as well.
...
Sharon was nominated by a patient, who had this to say about how Sharon is deserving of this award: "Sharon was an angel during my entire stay. Every staff member in this unit should be praised for their compassion and competency, but Sharon repeatedly went above and beyond the call of duty. Nurse Butcher cared for me as if I were her child - always making sure I was as safe and comfortable as possible and never making me feel as though I was bothering her with my many requests. In fact, Sharon made me feel as if I were her only patient. Sharon arranged for me to not only see the chaplain, but also a Greek Orthodox priest (something which I never would have known was available to me unless she had suggested it!) Sharon also spoke to me as a medical professional and like a true friend when I received what I considered a difficult diagnosis. Nurse Butcher counseled me and cared for me in ways that are far beyond what would be expected of an RN, and she should be recognized for the beautiful person and amazing nurse that she is. I actually enjoyed my stay in the Epilepsy Unit thanks to Sharon Butcher and the rest of the staff here. Thank you for the opportunity to nominate Nurse Butcher and may God bless everyone here at OHSU."
