Michele King’s nickname on our floor is “wonder woman.” Everyday I have worked alongside her, she always goes above and beyond with patient care and teamwork. Continually, she helps patients, family members, and co-workers even before anyone has to ask. When Michele does anything for anyone, it is always more than you expected. She has always been a great advocate for anyone on our floor, is never scared to speak up to support staff or patients.
A specific example of why I think Michele deserves this award was when I had a patient whose oxygen saturations were worsening. I was repeatedly calling the physician and keep getting orders that continued to not change patient status and was getting the round-about from the MD about coming to see the patient right away. Finally, Michele saw my frustration with the situation and called the MD and advocated for the patient and me. She got the MD to come down to see the patient immediately. She became my voice and the patient voice when I felt I wasn’t being heard. It helped me so much to be supported and it saved my patient from being on the verge of a RAT or Code.
When I mentioned to Michele that our LEEP (Employee Engagement) committee was nominating her for the DAISY Award, she was shocked and honored. She stated, “I feel like I’m just doing my job and nothing more.” Michele is a joy to work with and brings the compassion and dedication we all aspire to have each and every time we work.
