Of all the DAISY's in the field of nursing, Cathy Scholtens is one of the greats! I nominated Cathy for the DAISY Award on behalf of every parent, child, and colleague that has been lucky enough to be in the presence of such a remarkable nurse. It is difficult to highlight a particular moment where Cathy has shined as a nurse because she is extraordinary every day that she wears her pediatric friendly scrubs!
When it comes to her patients, Cathy is exceptionally compassionate, patient, and fun! Not only does she provide safe care, but she brings a lightness and joy into every interaction, even if for only a brief moment, no matter how scary or tough the situation might be. Kids are drawn to her silly and playful demeanor; she can actually make a day in the hospital fun - pure magic!
In pediatrics, caring for the family is an extension of caring for the patient and is just as vital for healing. Cathy brings an enormous amount of comfort to our patients' families! If she could effectively give chest compression with one hand while keeping the other hand on a parent's shoulder she would. She is always aware of the needs of the family and goes above and beyond to ensure their emotional and physical needs are met so that they can in-turn meet the emotional needs of their children.
Cathy has been one of my favorite parts of working at Community over the years! She works very hard, every day and always with a smile and an infectious positivity! She is the first to offer a helping hand to her coworkers no matter how difficult her patient load may be! One of my favorite qualities about Cathy is her ability to build people up around her. She takes the time to celebrate the work that her coworkers do, from dietary staff to senior leadership! Cathy is always giving praise and encouragement in the form of fishbowl kudos, locker love notes, magnets, personalized thank you notes, Friday update shout-outs, painted rocks, and hilarious videos...the list goes on and on! I have never known someone who spends so much time and energy honoring others - she is a gift to us all. Always encouraging, engaging, hilarious, and kind, Cathy has created such a positive environment for children to heal! She is such a huge part of what makes Community Children's such a special place to be!
