Nurses are unsung heroes as they put in continuous effort every day without any recognition. Sue is a perfect example of this, as she goes above and beyond to care for her patients and makes every effort to put all the pieces together before a patient is discharged. Sue's caring approach helps patients feel comfortable to open up in situations that they never felt comfortable in. Sue takes a whole new approach to diabetes education, as she looks at the whole person instead of the hard facts.
One example of this happened a month ago in the ED as Sue saw a teenage patient who came in with one of multiple DKA admissions. Sue proceeded to take a whole new approach with her as she asked what the patient's goals and aspirations were (I was with her during this visit and it made me tear up). The patient then said she wanted to open up a daycare and start her own business. This made the patient smile and look forward to the future.
From this, the patient wanted to start taking care of her diabetes to achieve her life-long goals. I have never seen an approach like this in medicine, as we sometimes get consumed by the test results, diagnoses, and tasks. Sue is intrinsically motivated to do the best for every single patient she sees along with her coworkers. She is truly the best mentor and the best caretaker I have ever come across. There are countless stories that occur every day with Sue that I could list here.
