We met Jillian the evening our 12-week-old daughter, had open-heart surgery. She was in recovery in the PCICU. A week earlier our roller coaster ride into the CHD family started when we innocently went to see the pediatrician for a swollen eye. What started out as no big deal quickly escalated as we went from the pediatrician's office to the ER, and from there to ACH via ambulance. Nurse Jillian has an amazingly warm, friendly, and confident disposition. Post-surgery we were grateful that it had all gone well, and we were keen to comfort and be there for our daughter. Jillian made us feel at ease as she explained what she was doing and why always emphasizing her intentions along the way "to make things easier" or "more comfortable or "to help". We felt she really cared about us and our daughter. She spoke to her lovingly - even when she stirred, Jillian would instantly talk to her and verbally empathize, saying out loud what she thought she might be feeling. Her warmth and care were palpable, and it was clear to us that her foundation of knowledge and skill is deep. She expertly administered meds, moved our daughter into various positions, suctioned, amazingly organized all the tubes and cords so that our child could move more freely and so that we could hold her. She advocated for us to other nurses, encouraging them to follow what she started with feeds so that the minimal breast milk I produce wouldn't be water. She made herself available to answer our questions and would formulate sensible plans of treatment based on the parameters we needed to work with. We felt so well taken care of, and we were relieved that Jillian was thoughtful about trying to minimize discomfort and pain for our daughter. We feel very fortunate that we were paired with Jillian during two of her shifts. She is an amazing person and professional. While we wish there was no reason for us to be in the PCICU, we are grateful to have had the opportunity to be in Jillian's care.
