My husband, L, was admitted to Methodist ICU after suffering a stroke and two seizures - one in the ambulance after arriving at the hospital ER and the second after his intubation. On being transferred to ICU, Patricia took over his care and worked diligently to stabilize his vitals and intravenous drugs. Patricia's calm demeanor and confident care continued throughout the two days she worked with L. Even though her scheduled shifts were over after our second day in ICU, I can't tell you how relieved I was to see her on the third day when she volunteered for extra hours. As it turned out, Patricia arrived when several nurses were in our room trying to insert a port in his right arm. Unfortunately, L's veins were difficult to find, partly because they were so small and partly, I think, they were just exhausted from being poked. Patricia assisted with the Doppler to find the vein and insert the port which eliminated the need for further IV insertions. While I know there was another patient Patricia was caring for during our time with her, there was never a time that I didn't feel as though we were her number one priority (something tells me the other family might have felt the same). Not only did she seem to be constantly attending to L's needs, which was continuing his fight with high fevers, adjustments to the Propofol and Fentanyl's effects on his vitals, not to mention the treatment for the stroke and seizure, but Patricia also seemed to care as much about me and my range of emotions. Seeing your vital, intelligent, active husband in such a state is very terrifying, humbling, and at times, overwhelming. She consoled me when I was falling apart, calmly and patiently answered my endless questions, all the while keeping her eye on her number one priority in the room, my husband. Not only was she a wonderful nurse, but she is also one of the most compassionate human beings I've ever met. Everyone that cared for L, from the doctors to the housekeeping staff, could not have been better; however, I feel that Patricia was exceptional and for that reason, she is a DAISY Nurse.
