My 25-year-old son has Autism and lives in a Group Home. Derek Sheets is his Nurse Consultant for his Group Home. M needed lab work completed but refused to wear a face mask to enter the hospital. When Derek learned of this, he got permission to go to M's home and draw the labs. M can sometimes be a hard stick. Derek was able to stick him and get blood, however, M moved and the stick was lost. Derek did not want to stick him again. The next day, M's Group Home staff drove him to Bayhealth and Derek came to the parking lot to draw his blood, so that M would not have to be traumatized by the face mask again. I believe Derek had another nurse or lab tech with him, and this blood draw was successful. M was able to get all necessary labs done and was not traumatized by wearing a face mask. I truly believe that this act went well above and beyond for a patient with significant challenges. Derek demonstrates the true definition and qualities of a Nurse! We are so thankful to have him on our team!
