My husband of 50 years suffered a huge brain bleed and stroke of the left frontal lobe. He had surgery and treatment for 3 weeks in Grand Rapids. Shortly after transfer for rehabilitation, he was sent to St. John's with pneumonia and another huge bleed and stroke - on the right side of his brain. Neurosurgeons for both hospitals determined the prognosis was poor, even with invasive surgery. Even so, they planned to do another CT scan that next day.
Nurse Andrew (Drew) Besonen in the ER and my son and I saw that my hubby, a purple heart award Marine Vietnam Vet, was suffering and in pain from the huge bleed, his face contorted every minute or so. Drew called the neurosurgeon and persuaded them to allow him to administer relief. My husband was immediately more comfortable - a great relief to him and family members who came in to see him one by one. The next morning, Drew came to see him in ICU and pinned a Marine Badge on his gown. A veteran himself (Army) and a good man, he truly cared! We were moved beyond belief! He is awesome!
