I was hospitalized after completing my radiation and chemotherapy for rectal cancer. The tumor was gone and the radiation was done to ensure there would be no further problems. After my last radiation treatment, I thought everything was ok. However, I began to have severe diarrhea and pain that could not be controlled by ordinary means. I was admitted to Desert. Although all my nurses were pleasant, Raeleen went above and beyond expectations. I knew when we met that she was special. She had a glimmer in her eye and an air that told me that she really knew her job. She was able to explain why my pain was so severe and provided pamphlets about my ointments and creams. She applied them tenderly. She put her arms around me and hugged me when I most needed a hug and a cry. She waited until I was calm before leaving the room, realizing that TLC is more than providing someone medication. She empathized with my pain and shared stories to calm me down. During this period of COVID, being hospitalized without friends and family to visit is exceptionally lonely. Raeleen and I became close as sisters as soon as we met. She has a rare quality of being able to put you at ease and make you feel that you can pull through even the most difficult situations. She has the ability and education to explain your situation in simple and understandable language. She is one smart lady. I honestly love her and know she cares about her patients!
