Becky Tawwater is truly an exemplary nurse. She knows how to balance compassion, boundaries, caring, and safety. She cared for a patient with a gunshot wound who was dangerously ill and scared, yet using bravado and unreasonable demands as a way of coping. Becky was compassionate, helping him make a decision in his own best interest while allowing him to preserve his dignity. She patiently interacted with him in a very respectful way even though he was swearing and verbally abusive. He responded to her compassion by trying to control himself and allow much needed care to take place. She was able to help him see past his fear, anger, and pain to arrive at a decision that probably saved his life.
This is not the only time I have witnessed her outstanding ability to show compassion in very challenging situations. She is an exemplary nurse and outstanding role model.
