In December, there was a tragic accident on the highway involving a 15-year-old boy who was struck and killed. Mandy and one of our perinatal techs volunteered to do a mold of the child's hand. This is something we generally do for parents of stillborn infants. It is a much more difficult to do this for a larger person and required a large amount of alginate. Mandy carefully arranged the hand into a natural position. It was beautiful! She then contacted the family and presented the hand mold.
I saw this comment on Facebook from a relative of the child.
"Friend, you can't imagine the joy you brought to my aunt, uncle and cousins with your precious gift. She said she will never be able to thank you enough. Well, you have a heart of gold and we will never say thank you enough! This is a piece of my cousin my aunt wouldn't have if it weren't for two amazing employees who went above and beyond their call of duty."
This is not the first time Mandy has done this for families experiencing loss; not only on the OB unit but also in the emergency department. Her caring and compassion are extraordinary.
