My father-in-law was a patient in the hospital with the diagnosis of stage 4 liver cancer. He was the last of the grandparents and had an extremely close relationship to all four of my children. He was the heart of our family, who could light up a room with his smile and make everyone laugh. Naturally, my children were very upset with the terminal diagnosis. We took turns staying with him.
When my daughter was with him, she was unsure about the noise coming from the oxygen and nasal cannula, so she went to the nurse's station. As she was telling his nurse what was going on, she fell apart and started crying. His nurse, Rebecca Douglas, hugged my daughter and cried with her. My daughter texted me and told me how much that meant to her. She said the nurse didn't question her concerns or make light of them in any way but just showed her compassion and understanding.
I was so impressed with Rebecca's clinical skills but more importantly, her compassionate care for my father-in-law and my children.
