I was caring for a patient that Valree had numerous times. The patient had been inpatient for weeks. This night, Valree had been cancelled for the first6 hours. Since it seemed likely she would be needed at 1 AM, she decided to come in and work on her mandatories.
When she arrived she learned her patient from the previous shift was contracting and since Valree spoke Spanish she visited her. She wasn't into full labor yet but the contractions were getting closer and stronger. The patient's husband was in Yuma with their other children. Although we utilized our house interpreter, that person could not stay in the room as support. Val sat at her bedside on her own time to support this scared mom-to-be.
When the physician finally decided to move towards c-section, Valree remained at her side throughout the labor, OR, and recovery. I know the patient was extremely appreciative of her support and it was above and beyond.
