Following the delivery of my son, Danielle was my first postpartum nurse. In this capacity she was phenomenal, but excellent nursing care is the standard at Prentice and I know that many of the nurses are likely as helpful and compassionate as Danielle. Danielle went far above the call of duty during my second day in the postpartum unit. She was not assigned to be my nurse that day, but she came by to take my vitals one time as my nurse was very busy. Danielle asked me how I was doing, and although I said I was alright, she must have seen it in my eyes that I was not having an easy time. She told me she had to take vitals on one more patient and would return. Five minutes later she was back, sitting in the chair at my bedside, comforting me as a flood of worries descended upon her. My son wasn't latching well (we later learned he had a tongue tie) and breastfeeding was off to a rocky start. Danielle spent an hour with me that afternoon and let me express my new mom anxieties in full. She was thoughtful and validated my feelings, and then helped me try to latch my son. She showed me online resources, gave me countless tips, and then arranged for a lactation consultant to visit me that day after she realized that my son was unable to latch effectively. My son had his tongue tie revised on day 7 of his life and everything is smooth sailing now. Without Danielle's compassion and commitment to caring for me, I hate to think about how long it might have been before the tongue tie was discovered. Danielle was the single most helpful member of the Prentice team in my opinion and deserves to be recognized for taking the time and giving the effort to identify and help solve what could have been a major hurdle. Thanks to Danielle, it was only a blip. I will be forever grateful.
