This particular day we had a patient come through triage who was a stroke alert. She was very scared. It was heart-wrenching. We knew she had children and had some other new-found medical complications. Dave, her nurse, was amazing with her. The patient verbalized how comfortable Dave made her feel and that his care was above and beyond. The soothing words and subtle sense of humor were spot-on. Dave maintained the patient's modesty with care and supported prepping her for CT when she was unable. Not only was the suspense killing her waiting for the radiology reading, but now the doctor was discussing the daunting decision of TPA with her, and/or a possible transfer to another facility.
Dave did not leave the patient's side the entire time. The treatment decision was made and Dave's commitment to the patient did not waiver. They kept up small talk, which put her at ease, and she did show signs of improvement by the time she was moved to another unit.
Dave is a phenomenal nurse every day, but this day, specifically, he was extraordinary. The warmth that he emulated from the care and concern was felt by all. It made my heart smile and it was the perfect picture of holistic care.
