My father was a proud man and over the last twelve weeks had been in the hospital four times, with two stays at two transitional care facilities. When he became ill last week he expressed to my mother that he did not want to return to the hospital. My mother then called for hospice care. Late Friday afternoon I do believe we met one of the most special nurses we have yet to meet. Soffie came into the room calmly, compassionately. She held my father's hand, administered his morphine and other drugs. When he was comfortable that night she left but was on call. The next morning we did need her desperately. My father was in severe pain so my mom called Soffie. Again in she came with her appropriate sweatshirt with angel wings on her back. She took over moving my Dad to another bed, administering medication, calling the doctor calmly doing what the rest of us were unable emotionally to do. The day continued and Soffie was there. She only left when she had to. She talked to us; she stroked my Dad's head. Soffie was the angel who told us calmly that it was time. She stayed with us. And when the unthinkable was over she took control, calling the Neptune Society.
Soffie was indeed our angel and we will always remember her. We will always fondly remember our experience with Torrance Memorial Hospice. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts; you taught us all that dignity in death also means compassion, caring, and love.
