On Sunday we received a Patient from ICU. Upon receiving the patient he told us that his wife was very sick and that he was supposed to have a meeting with Hospice. Shortly after his arrival we met with him and while crying he signed his wife onto hospice. He was very distraught because he himself was not well enough to go to OH-Dearborn to see his wife, possibly for the last time.
Sara, his receiving RN, spoke with the hospice RN and discovered that the Patient's wife had been intubated for three weeks, so by signing on with hospice and then being extubated she was not likely to last for very long. Sara knew that she had to find a way to let her Patient, who had been married for 54 yrs, say goodbye to his wife.
With the help of the doctor, the Patient was transferred to OH-D, where the Patient's wife was currently located, and the RN taking report stated that she would take the Patient to see his wife.
Sara did a great job. We were very impressed by her compassion and dedication to giving great care. She is a great example of nursing excellence! Great job!!
