This year the staff of the ER was faced with the death of an infant on their watch. While the loss of a patient is always a sorrowful event, emotions are magnified when a child or infant is involved. To complicate the heartache, the mother of the baby boy speaks little to no English. The language barrier I faced while attempting to communicate our suspicions of why this 10-month-old child died created a heightened sense of frustration. Sonya emerged as a guardian angel for her fellow team members, for me as a coroner, and most importantly for the family grasping for answers to why this little one was dead. She was able to effectively step in and communicate with the mother. She eliminated the language barrier holding us back. Sonya was caring, nurturing, and had such patience as she calmly explained my conversations with the pleas of a desperate mother. She was the calming influence in a tragic and emotional time. She was able to build a sense of trust with this emotionally distraught mother, which ultimately helped this mother trust all of us. While always on point with her duties and tasks, she performed above and beyond what many view as the norm. Today and for the future I will forever hold a new respect and admiration for the unparalleled degree of love and honesty that Sonya gave to this family when they needed it most. She is a true DAISY Nurse!
