My wife J, was checked into the 4 East Oncology Unit of Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. It was on that day we learned J's breast cancer she first had in 2014 had returned with metastases to the brain, lungs, and bone. At the time we had no idea of exactly what the prognosis meant or how much time J had left. From that day until J passed away, we must have been in and out of 4 East at least 10 times with various conditions ranging from gastritis to pneumonia. Every one of your staff members treated J with professionalism, kindness, and dignity as she slowed with every visit we made.
There was one special angel on the floor that bonded very closely with J from the moment they met. Her name is Melissa. Melissa and J hit it off from their first words and in the end, when we found ourselves transitioned under palliative care, there was no one better to have with our family than Melissa as we gracefully kept J out of pain and told her it was okay to go to Heaven. I can never thank Melissa enough for what she did for J and also for me, too!
In the end, we only had 75 days, or 10 and a half weeks together, but the very special group of employees you have on 4 East made everything beautiful, if death could be thought of in that manner.
It has only been about two months since J passed, and with every waking day as I thank God for the time I had with J, I also am grateful for the outstanding staff on 4 East. Please share my deepest gratitude to Melissa and the rest of the 4 East team!
