In June, E was born at the Salah Foundation Children's Hospital and was immediately brought to the NICU where her story began. E was born at 26 weeks weighing only 1lb 8oz. That day was filled with a lot of emotion for the family and a sweet, hardworking, caring nurse saw a family in need. That day Audri signed up to primary E and began to form a special bond with E, her Mom, and Dad. Audri had no idea what she was in for. E spent 3 months in our unit and by her side was Audri Jones, her primary nurse. E's stay in our NICU was fraught with many complications. During her short life, she experienced a perforated bowel and stomach, pulmonary hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage, osteopenia, ascites, MRSA infection, and multiple surgeries.
Audri took care of E, who was extremely sick, every day she worked and became a very important part of her family's life.
E's condition became very dire in October and she was then transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital where she would undergo cardiac surgery. Audri continued to be there for E and her family. She spent many days off still at E's bedside and followed her progress.
In December, Audri was working in our NICU when she received a text that E has taken a turn for the worst. The family in their time of need turned to the nurse who had been by their side since the beginning of their daughter's life. After work, Audri went to Joe DiMaggio to say goodbye to E and be with the family as their daughter passed away.
Audri's journey with E's family didn't end there. Audri was at the service where the family asked her to speak about the special bond she formed with E over the past several months. Audri's bond with the family continues to grow. She remains in contact with E's family and will always be considered a special part of their family.
It is very difficult for a nurse to become so involved with a patient. You think things will go well and when they don't each day will leave a little piece of yourself with the baby and their family.
