Tonight I was the charge nurse on AMU and was asked to transport the patient in 3826 to CT because she was on a heparin drip. The entire way through the tunnel and back the patient made it clear she could not have been more pleased with Carmelo. She talked about how nice he was and how he was very prompt with addressing all her needs and concerns. Specifically, the patient had been started on a new medication and given her extensive list of allergies she was concerned. She explained she had an anaphylactic reaction to lisinopril in the past so she was naturally very scared and hesitant to take a new medication. Carmelo immediately acknowledged her fears and concerns stating he would call the doctors just to double check that this medication was something they indeed wanted and paged the physician right in the room where the patient could see him. He then waited and talked to the physician in the room to verify the need for the medication. After clarification, Carmelo sat down and did education with the patient on why she needed the medication and potential risk factors. He also paid close attention to her afterward to make sure she was doing okay. The patient felt so reassured and safe with the care she received from Carmelo and felt that the whole experience was positive and healing. This type of attention and caring toward a patient is exactly what this award is about and Carmelo is more than deserving of the honor and recognition.
