Kim has does many things for our patients on a daily basis, but I can highlight a few that really stand out to me. Recently we had a new dialysis pediatric patient who was having trouble with her perm catheter working. The patient was to have a 4-hour dialysis session. She aimed around 11 am and her catheter wasn't working. She had to have TPA to dwell in her catheter for an hour. The patient was going to miss her lunch due to being on dialysis. We don't allow patients to eat during dialysis because it causes hypotension and sometimes vomiting.
Kim ordered a lunch tray for the patient and pulled the curtain around the patient when her lunch arrived so she could eat without other patients noticing. The patient was able to enjoy her lunch while her catheter was dwelling TPA. After the dwell, her catheter worked and she was able to receive full treatment. She slept most of her treatment since she wasn't hungry.
Another example of Kim's caring was when we had a patient who came after a procedure and was not going to be back in his room in time to order dinner. The patient had no money to get anything to eat. He hadn't eaten all day. His dialysis didn't end until after 10 pm. Kim walked down the hallway to Subway and purchased him a sandwich before they closed, with her own money. She wanted to assure that her patient had something to eat before breakfast the next morning.
