Elise has been a nurse for 2 years at Good Samaritan Hospital. As an RN on the Ortho/Trauma unit, she cares for several patients with traumatic brain injuries. Elise has a very special way with patients. She is kind, respectful, compassionate and very patient. In particular, Elise was caring for a 66-year-old male who had a TBI and was a patient on her unit for several weeks. He had been in restraints then placed in a Foley bed for his safety. For 48 hours before his planned discharge, he needed to be out of the foley bed and out of restraints in order to qualify for transfer. He was challenging to keep safe and he could not remember directions. Elise spent 2 shifts with him doing everything she could to keep him safe and occupied. Elise had him next to her at the nurse's station all shift, talking to him, listening to country music, and having him read his book to her. She talked to him respectfully just like he was one of her friends or relatives. He was so cooperative with her and really took a liking to her. He did whatever she needed him to do. He really liked her and felt safe with her. He was able to stay out of any restraints and keep his dignity as well as get placed in a facility appropriate for him. I was amazed by her patience and respect for this patient. Elise made a significant connection with this patient which made a huge difference.
