My 85-year-old mother suffered a stroke a year ago which left her very limited cognition. On Monday, she fell and broke her hip. The move from home to the ER to admission and surgery left her utterly confused. She was frightened, in pain, and oftentimes uncooperative. Carolina stepped up to be a compassionate nurse that advocated on my mom's behalf. She would sometimes have to delay a procedure for a short time to allow Mom to calm down and be successful in the goal. Carolina also offered alternative suggestions at how we might make Mom more comfortable even if it took a few more minutes or required her to take an extra trip to grab an apparatus that would assist. Carolina's concern was completely focused on Mom's needs and not on her own convenience.
