Jami is a DAISY Nurse on many levels. Jami is involved with the unit-based council in establishing the "Time Out" format used in the OR. Jami strives all the time to speak for his patients, to ensure that everyone in the OR is involved with the "Time Out" process and engaged in the effort to ensure the patient's safety. Through education on an ongoing basis, Jami keeps us all on task regarding our patients' safety, dignity, and needs. When a case is finished in the OR, Jami ensures that his patient is covered and secure before calling for turn-over.
In Jami's service, retinal surgery, Jami meets with surgeons and staff to ensure that everyone is up to date regarding procedures, equipment, and materials needed for retinal surgery. Jami has been instrumental in gathering materials for new surgeons in the service to ensure that Jami's patients received the highest level of care possible. When anyone has a question, Jami is most willing to share his expertise, Jami works interdepartmentally to ensure that equipment and supplies are available and in working order.
Jami is an acknowledged leader and role model in our OR. Jami advocates consistently for patients and staff. It is an honor to work with Jami and I feel I am a better nurse having worked with him.
***
I think Jami goes above and beyond his scope of practice, but on this particular day a little more so. Jami is a lead service member for retina surgery and has been a major participant in implementing the program. He coordinates and prepares for surgeries and knew of an 11-year-old who had prior surgeries who was coming in the next day. Jami found out her love for Klondike bars and brought in a dozen hoping to make this day special for her. In PACU she couldn't wait to give him the biggest hugs. Jami makes me proud.
