I feel as though Emily exemplifies the qualities of a great nurse. I love being able to work with her and know the shifts she is working, usually as charge nurse, are going to go well.
As charge nurse, she works hard to make sure that all nurses and their patients are taken care of. She is constantly helping out other nurses, going to other floors to complete tasks, and answering parent phone calls, all while staying calm, which is something to admire and strive to be like. Emily not only functions as the charge nurse but has been known to take on her own patent load to better patient outcomes. This is not something day shift charge nurses do, but she goes above and beyond to make sure all patients are safe. In particular, she has taken a more challenging family/patient on the unit to make the day easier for the family or taken an admission coming to the unit because it was needed without an available admission spot.
Emily not only has a role as charge nurse, but she also works with our new nurses on the unit. She creates their schedules with the preceptors, classroom time with material she teaches, and goes above and beyond to ensure they get the most out of their orientation on the unit so they become the best nurse they can.
Emily is a great critical thinker, takes on challenges head-on, and works hard to create the best outcomes for our patients. When she is working as a staff nurse, she has a great base of information to complete her daily task. She often takes very complex patients on the unit but handles it with a calm demeanor. I try to gather as much of her knowledge as I can because she often has great solutions for problems she comes across and it is something to be admired. She loves her patients and works hard to do the best job she can every day she works. This does not go unnoticed by her coworkers and patients/families. She is a true DAISY Nurse and the MACC fund is lucky to have her.
