It has been brought to my attention that Amanda was recently in a situation where she, unfortunately, had to challenge an established male surgical colleague to ensure that he followed proper protocol and sterile technique while treating her patient. Her patient could not advocate on his own behalf - nor does he have family/friends to advocate on his behalf. This is all the more impressive to me as there would be no obvious resultant accolades or thanks from the patient's loved ones. Additionally, this interaction came with its own difficulties; Amanda simultaneously insisted one surgeon leave the bedside while insisting another follow protocol. She will inevitably have to continue to work with these gentlemen and I believe her to be capable and professional enough to do so. Her dedication and decisiveness to ensure that her patient received only the highest standard of care is one of the most courageous acts of advocacy that I have ever been privileged to hear about. Amanda took pride in her ownership of her patient and we need more nurses like her. I am lucky to call her a colleague and we at Allegheny General Hospital are lucky to have her on our staff.
