When I think of a good nurse, I think of someone who is intelligent, but I also think of someone who is kind, sincere, compassionate and shows a love for others. Sherry checks every one of these boxes off.
Sherry has had a 30+ year nursing career. She has been in various staff level and leadership positions in her nursing career, but I came to know Sherry approximately 13 years ago when she was working as an Emergency Department Nurse and House Administrator. It was evident to me that her kindness was on display with every encounter.
I really came to know Sherry well about six years ago as I took over as manager of the Hixson House Administrators. I could write a novel about the countless acts of kindness that she has performed. She truly seeks to make each day better for everyone that she meets. That is not something that can be taught or learned, that is just who Sherry is.
Last year, when our hospital was full, Sherry had the idea to create the Hixson BOOST (Bringing Our Ongoing Support to Teamwork) to help lift the morale of staff. Since then, we have had over 10 BOOST events where leaders have been able to cook or serve staff to thank them for their hard work.
Another example, that just occurred this week, was when Sherry heard that a staff member was struggling and did not have transportation. Sherry had an SUV that she did not drive often and gave this vehicle to the staff member so that they could have the transportation needed. She shared that God placed it in her heart to give that child a car and she remembers when she was young, and someone helped her family. Rarely does a day go by that I do not hear about some act of kindness that Sherry does.
If nursing is truly about helping others, then there is no better nurse than Sherry!
