Doreen recently cared for a patient who presented to the ED with severe chest and back pain. She quickly assessed the situation and notified the physician of this Level I patient while securing the necessary IV lines and diagnostic tests needed to make a rapid diagnosis of aortic dissection. As the patient de-compensated, she prioritized his needs and delivered the necessary medications to stabilize his pain and blood pressure. Her calm & caring manner provided the necessary reassurance needed to help the patient and his family during this very frightening crisis.

She took control of this critical situation in an assertive and professional manner, collaborating with co-workers to redistribute other patients under her care. She utilized team members to coordinate the many diagnostic procedures and critical care interventions necessary to stabilize the patient.

Doreen balanced a very complex family situation with sensitivity while keeping the family updated with accurate information regarding the patient’s condition. She worked closely with the ED physician, pharmacist, and ancillary staff during his stay in the ED. She provided pertinent information to the receiving facility and the transport team, ensuring continuity of care during this critical time.

She remained calm, upbeat, and positive while providing appropriate, ongoing education to the patient and family as the crisis unfolded. Her supportive demeanor was greatly appreciated by the family as they faced a potentially life threatening diagnosis. Her skill in providing easily understood information during this stressful situation gained the confidence of the family members while easing the stress of the staff.

She bonded with the patient and his family during their stay in the ED and stayed long after her shift was over, providing emotional support and education to the family. She also provided a detailed report for the transport team and the Level I trauma center to ensure continuity of care during his transfer. This patient was transferred successfully to Shand’s Hospital in Gainesville and survived the critical surgery needed to repair his dissection which saved his life. He has since returned to the JAHVA and is doing well.
