Carly is a newer nurse on the unit but demonstrated a level of care that far surpasses a new nurse. She discharged her patient home and after he left, she realized that he had forgotten his discharge instructions and prescriptions. I called the patient at home and learned that he was unable to return to get the instructions and prescriptions because he did not drive. Upon looking up his address, Carly realized that he only lived about a mile away from her. She volunteered to take his instructions and prescriptions to his house on her way home from work that evening. This is the level of care we strive for every day here at UPMC Mercy. She not only took excellent care of the patient while he was in house but realized his care needs extended outside of the hospital as well. She continued to view this gentleman as her patient though he had left and felt obligated to uphold her duty as a nurse to provide the highest quality care possible. This is just such a good example of caring at a level beyond what is called for. She epitomized many of the core values we have here at UPMC Mercy.
