We had a situation that presented itself to us recently. Our daughter was car shopping and we were helping with her decision on her very first car. We had shopped for several days until she saw what she wanted. That night, my daughter and I were trying to finish all of the paperwork. She wanted to have her first car in her name without any help. So, this was a long process for her because she was a first-time buyer. By 1915, my wife (Rebecca) joined us after finished her shift at work to provide support and to answer any question they may have. Midway through the signing process, the manager approached us and said there was a car out in the parking lot with a lady asking for help because her boyfriend was not acting right. We approached the car and noticed a large young man unresponsive to stimuli and having difficulty breathing. Instead of me describing the situation, I thought I would pull my daughter's Facebook post of what she saw:
"Well, today has been an eventful day! I am super excited to say that I have successfully bought my own car! Anyway, something also happened today that will make me forever remember this experience. A man was having what appeared to be a heart attack, and by the grace of God, mom and A were there and able to help this man. Not only were they there for me for this time, but they were also in the right place and the perfect time. Thank you, mamma and A. Y'all made this the smoothest big girl purchase ever, you know other than the hiccup where a life needed to be saved. "
Through the whole situation, my wife was cool and collective, she did chest compressions while I maintained an open airway until EMS arrived. After EMS arrived, I bagged the patient and she continued chest compressions until an IV was started and a cardiac monitor was secured. The patient showed a bradycardia rhythm and he had a pulse. A reversal agent was given because of my wife's suggestion, after the paramedic gave a reversal agent IV, in the matter of 60 sec, the patient was awake and following commands. He was loaded on the stretcher and taken to Vidant ED for further management.
Now here is the funny part, all the employees were outside watching after it was over my wife, daughter and I walked back to the office wanting to finish the paperwork for our daughter's first car. We had to call the employees back to the office. I think they were still in shock about what happened and did not know what to say or do. After the initial shock was over, the staff congratulated us and thank us for a job well done. Just another day in a nurse's life!! She is awesome!!
