Today in the ED, we made the difficult decision to withdraw care on an elderly gentleman, who had no family here. We chose to keep him in the ED and I had assigned Jen to care for him. Jen stayed at his bedside, holding his hand and rubbing his head. She even played classical music for him and talked with him until the end. She made sure that he knew in his final hours that he was well cared for and he was not alone or in any pain. She showed true care and compassion for this patient. When I thanked her for this, she just smiled with a tear in her eye and said, "this is what we are here for".
