...This family was approach by a coordinator from Allograft Resources, and initially declined, then discussed it further among themselves and decided to donate corneas only. Unfortunately when I screened the medical chart with the RN, the patient was medically ruled out for cornea donation. The next-of-kin, the father, was very understanding even after I explained why we could not proceed with cornea donation for transplant or research/education. I feel it was most likely due to the type of treatment the family received from the RN, Denise Malone.

I spoke to her and she was very sweet and very helpful throughout the screening process and I think this friendly attitude was passed on to the family. I thought we should let her know that we are grateful for that supportive attitude and that hospital staff like her and this family are what make my job worthwhile and help us fight the good fight for those patients in need of transplants.
