I have found Jo Ann to be consistently engaged in the life experiences of each of her patients. My first example comes from an experience I shared with her when the patient and parents were clearly struggling with how they had been disrupted by illness. Jo Ann recognized their distress and gingerly assessed their needs. She didn't cure the child of cancer, but she did create an opportunity for the family to take a deep breath and feel cared for. She did have to give the patient a stick, but she also gave them assurance that someone cares.
Secondly, Jo Ann is consistently positive. She is upbeat and encouraging. This would apparently share her optimism. When emotions are running high and tears are flowing, she is able to interject a fresh breath of optimism. On one occasion she did this as mother and baby were crying. I watched as she continued to do her job. As she withdrew the needle, Jo Ann assessed the level of discomfort and when she felt the time was appropriate she offered an encouragement and a smile. Simple but powerful.
