As her previous charge nurse, I witnessed how Amber always went the extra mile. However, it wasn't until I became her manager that I really got to see how dedicated, committed, and compassionate Amber is about her job. We have a patient who has been on 5C for several months, who has not gone home from the hospital since birth. The mother of this patient was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer upon the birth of this patient. Therefore, this patient is alone most days while her mother receives treatment. A lot of time her mother cannot come to the hospital because her immune system is too low. In order to offset some of the stress and allow the mom to feel as if she wasn't missing so much of her daughter's first year of life, Amber bought a journal and wrote in it every day about the baby's milestones of that day. The journal entries were so thoughtful and really painted a clear picture of what the baby had been up to. The mom was overwhelmed with joy when Amber gave her the journal. As humble as Amber is, she thought it was no big deal. However, this is a great example of a nurse going above and beyond as she has done so many times before. I am so blessed that Amber is a part of my team.
