Kellie was recognized by one of her patients, who described her as the best nurse she has ever had and said that Kellie gave the best care she has ever received. The patient said Kellie knew she was in pain and she was extremely empathetic and did everything she could to ensure she was as comfortable as possible. When she told Kellie that heat helped the pain, Kellie repeatedly brought her warm blankets. The patient said Kellie made her feel like she mattered. When she felt uncomfortable about having to undress, Kellie reassured her and calmed her down by making her laugh. The patient said, normally, when she is anxious, there's nothing anyone can do. The anxiety consumes her. But Kellie made jokes and got her to laugh. She said, "It wasn't really a big deal because I was laughing." Once the patient's mother arrived, Kellie tended to her as well as the patient. The patient said she has come to the ER in horrible pain multiple times over the course of 4 ½ years, only to have her blood and urine tested before being sent on her way without an answer. Kellie advocated for the patient and, working with the team, she was able to find answers about her pain after 4 ½ years. Before the patient left, she said Kellie gave her a hug that made her feel like they had known each other forever.
"Kellie has been an amazing addition to the team in her short tenure with us," Kellie's director said. "She brings extensive pediatric knowledge to us from Houston and has had a great impact on our patients. She truly embodies excellence in nursing. We, in the ED, are lucky to have her!"
Because of Kellie's compassionate and caring efforts, her patients experience a level of care that exemplifies the impact nurses have in creating an environment where patients and families feel at home.
