A young man was admitted to our unit with a gang related gun shot wound. His older brother was killed and his extended family was present at the time of the shooting. Prior to Caren taking care of this patient, he wouldn't participate in his care. After Caren became his nurse she was able to get him to participate in his care; getting out of bed, bathing, talking. She provided him with information on gang related support and intervention.
After he was discharged she went to his home and did wound care for several weeks. She saw the patient before he moved to Southern California to be closer to his immediate family. I've always known Caren is an incredible nurse that went above what most do for their patients. She connected with this young man and made a difference in his life. That is why I nominate Caren for the DAISY Award.
