Tammy Winchell RN, PNP, DNP exemplifies the characteristics of a DAISY nurse. Tammy came to SHC-POR 1 ½ years ago; she is a nurse practitioner providing outstanding care to patients and their families in the Outpatient Clinic. She has had a diverse career and came to us with wonderful knowledge; prior to coming to SHC Tammy had been in private practice, worked as a pediatric hospitalist and a child abuse investigator. She strongly believes in education; she received a BSN at the University of Portland, a MSN at Yale University, a Doctorate in Nursing Practice at University of Colorado; she is currently obtaining a post-doctorate degree in pediatric acute care; and she teaches part-time in the doctoral program at U of P. In the DAISY Award ceremony some of her many nomination comments that were read included:
Tammy is the definition of a patient advocate, always gives 110%.
She is a resource of knowledge to the care of children and sets a high standard for patient safety, professionalism, patient care and education; she has excellent skill at making children at ease and also takes the time to teach others how to set children as ease.
As a trusted member of the team, Tammy is called upon by all departments for her expertise.

She is a life-long learner who lives by the example to do your best every day.
An example of Tammy going the extra mile: One evening, she stayed late to accommodate a research patient and their family; after the appointment, she assisted them with their transportation needs and then made sure they made it home safely.
She is a great role model for the nursing profession and shows us that there is a need for a new generation of highly educated and impeccably prepared nurse practitioners who will be willing to continue to undertake the healthcare challenges in the future.
Tammy is very deserving of this high honor; we are all so very fortunate to work with her.
