From time to time OSU will receive a patient that can be challenging to place once they have received their care. On Feb 1, 2013 one of those "difficult" patients was to be discharged. Unfortunately for this patient, she was unable to return home to her mother due to prior history. This individual was to be discharged to Talbot House, but did not have essentially anything to her name.

When I arrived to the department on the morning of her pending discharge, I found Jillian at the nurse's station with Wal-Mart bags cutting tags off items. At the time I walked up, Jillian turned to see the confused look on my face and said that this was for this particular patient.

What I have not mentioned was this patient was extremely difficult to work with, unwilling and lacking self motivation. This is the type of patient that you expend a lot of energy on and see very little in return through their actions. Yet, here was one of my nurses who had gone out and bought items for hera back pack to keep her belongings, sweat pants and jacket, personal items, shoes, etc.

This was when I also found that Cheryl had purchased blouses/shirts for her as well. These nurses could have just let her leave with literally only the shirt on her back, yet they demonstrated compassion, caring, sensitivity (just to name a few) to this patient to help provide those essential items that we all take for granted.
