Monica is an exceptional nurse every day, however, one specific instance comes to mind to demonstrate her compassionate care. She was caring for a patient that was actively dying. He had been transferred from CCU the day before to Telemetry. This patient was kept comfortable, and seemed to be resting peacefully throughout the shift. The patient had one visitor, his daughter, the entire time. Monica's excellent assessment skills and nursing intuition allowed her to see that the daughter needed compassionate care as much as the patient did. The daughter was having a hard time with the thought of losing her father. Monica took extra time to sit and talk with the daughter. The daughter confided in Monica that she didn't know what she would do without her daddy and that she had taken care of him for a long time. She went on to say that she didn't even know how she would take care of herself when he passed. The daughter had no local family other than her father. Later, the daughter came out of the room and appeared scared and said to Monica, "I think he is passing". Monica confirmed this and held the patient's hand and comforted the daughter with her words and her presence. Monica cried with the daughter and stayed with her during the entire time to make sure they were not alone throughout the process. Monica stayed beyond her shift to make sure the daughter was okay. Monica displays these caring and compassionate qualities every day.
