I worked with Rebecca Reynolds during the winter semester. She was a true mentor and leader among her peers. She was only required to coach and precept for 200 hours, but each week she stayed one or two hours "off the clock" giving me tours, showing me how to work new equipment and machines, and discussing nursing concepts and culture. She oriented me to the real world of nursing! As a preceptor, she taught me how to listen to my patients, juggle an intense patient assignment and be a true team player. She would lead by example! She would reach out to others in her free time and ask if she could be of assistance. She regularly did small tasks for other nurses and PCTs on her team such as reading all the EKG strips.
As a student nurse, I saw her small actions make a huge difference in patient satisfaction and team morale. I hope I can emulate her as a real nurse myself one day. I have great respect for Rebecca and a greater respect for the profession after working with her. I'd be lucky to work with a nurse like her when I graduate - someone supportive, kind, helpful, professional and a team player. It was an honor to work beside Rebecca. It felt incredible to have someone so invested in my personal success as a young nurse!
