Suzy is always professional and goes out of her way to provide exceptional care. This past week we had a patient who came for surgery accompanied by her boyfriend and 13 year old son.
While waiting to go to surgery the boyfriend became upset with surgery delay and left abruptly- leaving behind the child while his mom waited to go to surgery. The mother called the godmother to pick him up who said she was 10 minutes away. In the meantime the mother went down to surgery and the boy was left on our unit. The godmother came almost two hours later to pick up the boy. Suzy made multiple phone calls regarding this situation. The emergency contact was the grandmother who was unable to pick him up. The godmother eventually showed up to take him home. While he was waiting, Suzy stayed by his side, set him up comfortably watching cartoons and provided him with food and drinks. She also came up with word search puzzles and coloring materials that he was happy to have. She gave him constant emotional support and "mothering" by tapping into her compassion as both a nurse and a mother she was able to keep him calm and content while the situation was resolved.
This is merely one specific example of the excellent care that Suzy provides on a daily basis to patients and their families. Suzy remains a leader on our unit through her actions, consideration and attentiveness to all of her patients, family and co-workers. She consistently meets the needs in the workplace and elsewhere but rises to meet the challenges of our patient population.
