Julie Murray deserves a DAISY Award for what happened about 3 months ago when she was working as the Charge RN and I was working as the medication RN. We had a difficult situation with a patient one day in the Behavioral Medicine department that I had never experienced before. I learned so much from Julie. She was extraordinary in her nursing clinical skills!
The patient was medication-seeking and began acting like he was having a seizure, violently shaking and falling back into this wheelchair. He began bleeding from the mouth. Julie immediately shot me a glance and I was relieved that she was taking control of the situation. She informed me that he had bitten his tongue in his desperation for an injection. Julie took action and initiated safe patient care. She was calm and collected and after securing the patient in his wheelchair and calling for assistance, Julie placed an ice cold wash cloth on the patient's forehead. She taught me tips and techniques on determining whether the patient is having a real seizure vs. pseudo-seizure.
Julie also advocated for this patient when calling the doctor. Throughout the entire situation, she remained professional in her care. Julie Murray is an outstanding role model!!
