Ashley approached her manager with great urgency about a patient, no less urgent than a patient who experienced a cardiac arrest. Her urgency was due to a request from a patient who had a craving for a pizza from Maria's. The patient was an oncology patient who had been struggling to eat with no appetite due to the ravages of her disease process.
The pizza was ordered and arrived promptly, but this is not where the story ends. You see, the patient was extremely weak and barely had the energy to feed herself, so Ashley sat with her and they had their own "pizza party." The patient smiled and told her it tasted "so good." She passed on later that day after experiencing something that gave her great joy because of Ashley.
Ashley exemplifies all the qualities that the DAISY Award showcases, not only in this example, but how she touches the human spirit. Her skill and compassion is evident by making life meaningful, even for a brief moment. She is a role model not only to her peers but to our entire organization by showing that the "little things" that display kindness and caring are no less important to the human experience as restarting a heart to beat.
