Drew Padgett received a patient from the ER. The patient was critical and was accompanied by her mother and sister. Drew explained the possibility that the patient might have to be transferred to ICU. Shortly after that, the patient was indeed transferred to ICU and Drew called the family to notify them and then transferred care to the ICU nurses.

A few hours later, an overhead page announced that the patient coded. Drew called the (ICU) nurse to verify that it was the same patient. He then called the family and asked them to come to the hospital even though that was no longer his patient. When the family got here, he took them to the unit. While there, the patient coded and died.

Because Drew took the initiative to call the family, they were able to be there to say goodbye during the last moments of that patient's life.
